Umpire appointed to the Canterbury Umpire Advisory
Profile: Karen King
I began umpiring when I started Secondary School and continued to actively umpire for the next 2 decades, progressing through my local theory and practical and then on regional theory and practical, staying at that level and maintaining my badge.
While umpiring I was also involved with the Umpires committee and also had a stint on the NSC executive. As I become more involved in the behind the scenes work, I started to organise and coach other umpires as well as becoming involved on organising committees for tournaments.
I found that I really enjoyed coaching umpires and learning new techniques to pass on. I applied to be a member of the Canterbury Region Practical Panel which coaches, assesses and, endorses (examines) Regional level umpires in the Canterbury area. I was appointed to this panel in 2006 and was appointed convener this year. There are still other areas that I could progress to, such as the Canterbury NZ Practical Panel and then onto New Zealand level and an International level if I desire.
I applied to and was appointed to the Canterbury Umpire Advisory Group this year and am looking forward to new challenges with this.
Umpiring has now become a sport within itself as it takes a lot of dedication and time to get to the level you would like to be
